Hopworks Urban Brewery Celebrates 10 Years of Sustainably Brewing World-Class Beer

Portland, Ore., March 21, 2018 - Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB), the first Certified B Corporation brewery in the Northwest and member of 1% for the Planet, today announces its 10th anniversary. In conjunction with this important milestone, HUB is hosting three new beer festivals throughout the year. The first event, (B)Earth Day Beer Fest, takes place on Saturday, April 21 and features 10 special beers, a spotlight on sustainability, and a look back at the last decade.

“Since day one we have set out to brew world-class beer as sustainably as possible. I’m proud of what our whole team has accomplished so far,” said HUB Brewmaster and Founder, Christian Ettinger. “Beer is an incredible mash up of art, science, and passion. Throughout history beer has been the center of every great table and we are honored to have a small part in that history. We love beer and look forward to coming to work every day, and now with 10 years under our belt we look forward to 100 more.”

A Decade of HUB History Highlights

  • Hopworks Organic IPA, considered a classic in the West Coast IPA style, was HUB’s first brew in 2007.
  • Built with as many reclaimed materials as possible, and a host of energy and water efficient features, Hopworks Urban Brewery opened its doors for the first time in 2008 with Hopworks Organic IPA and Organic Rise Up Red on tap.
  • HUB expanded production from 3,000 barrels of beer in its first year to 13,300 barrels of beer and cider in 2017.
  • HUB expanded into North Portland with Hopworks BikeBar in 2011. The building is efficiently designed to meet the Net Zero energy building standard.
  • In 2012, the Oregon Sustainability Board presented HUB with the Governor’s Oregon Sustainability Grand Champion Award.
  • From B-Corp Certification, its 1% for the Planet membership, Salmon-Safe campus certifications, and its “Good Beer Does Good” campaign, HUB continues to make high quality beer while prioritizing environmental stewardship. 
  • HUB opened its third location complete with an 8-barrel brewhouse in December 2016 in Vancouver, Washington. This Salmon-Safe Certified development includes a 10Kw solar array, native landscaping and energy and water efficient design.
  • Over the last 10 years, HUB has partnered with hundreds of organizations and businesses for special beer projects. Many focus on sustainability, including Patagonia Provisions’ 2016 release of Long Root Ale brewed with Kernza, a perennial wheatgrass. HUB’s Organic Velvet ESB beer is one of the main ingredients in Tofurky’s Ham Roast.
  • 2017 was a monumental year of growth for HUB. This growth coincided with the revision of the flagship Hopworks Organic IPA, upgraded for the contemporary palate.

HUB’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION EVENT SCHEDULE

·         (B)Earth Day Beer Fest -- Saturday, April 21st from 4:30-9:00 pm
HUB kicks off its 10th anniversary with a warehouse party filled with great beer, music, food and friends. The festival is a retrospective on “10 years of sustainable beer” and pays homage to HUB’s birthday, B Corp
Ô status, and Earth Day. HUB will have 10 special beers available including a revived Deluxe Organic Ale brewed in collaboration with Ashley from Brewvana (an original HUB employee), and select HUB Mug Clubbers. Tickets are $20 and include anniversary glassware, 5 drink tickets (6-ounce pours), a food ticket, and access to a special HUB history and sustainability presentation by founder and brewmaster, Christian Ettinger. Attendees will enjoy music from the band Weekend Assembly, a set by DJ Dave2 and can pick up new 10-year anniversary branded merchandise. Tickets go on sale on March 21st and are limited to 300 people.

·         Salmon-Safe IPA Festival, Saturday, August 25th – In August, HUB turns its attention to water conservation and protecting clean water. This year, HUB invites 20 breweries to brew an IPA using Salmon-Safe Certified beer ingredients. Hopworks has long recognized the relationship between clean and abundant water and great beer, which includes using Salmon-Safe ingredients.

·         Cascadian Beer Fest, Saturday, November 10th – The final event in HUB’s 10th anniversary lineup, the Cascadian Beer Fest, will bring together 20 breweries to brew Cascadian-style beers using only ingredients from Cascadia. Each brewery is also partnered with an environmental organization from the region. As part of the event’s 1% For The Planet association, breweries will donate 1% of their beer’s sales to their partner organization.

Evil Sister Double IPA is created from taking the malt bill from Sweet As! Pacific Ale, and turning up the hops giving it the kick of a bigger, more evil sister but still drinking like its smaller little sister.

Evil Sister gives hop flavors of peach, citrus, and a slight herbal tea aroma that all play well together for a complex nose. This leads to a very balanced Double IPA that is a little of both worlds: strong and refreshing. Quite evil indeed.

Evil Sister Double IPA was originally brewed for the 2013 Oregon Brewers Festival and since the first batch, it quickly turned into one of our most sought after beers despite being brewed once a year. The brewers at Full Sail have a zest for life – and beer. In case you were wondering, Citrus maxima comes from the scientific name of the pomelo, one of the three primary ancestors of citrus fruits. Playing on this, as well as the unique grapefruit-like character of pomelo, Citrus Maxima is an easy-drinking pale ale that’s well stocked with Simcoe and Citra hops, while fresh pomelo and grapefruit peels lend citrus and grapefruit notes.

“This was a fun project, but certainly complicated and labor intensive at this scale,” says Full Sail Brewmaster Greg Doss. “Our goal was to blend aromas from citrus-forward hops with fresh grapefruit and pomelo in a refreshing and drinkable pale ale. I think we did it.” You’ve heard of dry hopping – so why not dry peeling? “Hundreds of pounds of fresh citrus peel are infused into each batch,” says Doss, “but it’s worth it.”

Lady Lupulin Blonde Ale Available March 28 at Bale Breaker

Yakima, WA, USAMarch 21, 2017 – Lady Lupulin Blonde Ale, a special beer brewed by Bale Breaker Brewing Company using an exclusive hop blend created by YCH HOPS and the Pink Boots Society, will be released on March 28 at the Bale Breaker Taproom. This celebratory beer was brewed at Bale Breaker by women in the local community in honor of International Women’s Day.

Representatives from Bale Breaker, YCH HOPS, Single Hill Brewing, Dru Bru, and Cornerstone Ranches participated in Yakima’s Pink Boots Society Brew Day event, truly making it a collaborative project.

“With our location in hop country, we’re fortunate to collaborate with women in all aspects of the industry who grow hops, brew, and manage the sales, marketing, and finances along the way.” said Jackie Beard, Bale Breaker’s Quality Manager and local brew day coordinator. “It’s an honor to showcase the hops of the Yakima Valley and the women who bring them from the soil to your glass!”

“Working with Pink Boots Society to produce the exclusive hop blend, we wanted to create an opportunity for people in all aspects of the hop and beer industries to come together and brew something special to celebrate women,” says ­­­Kate Ruffing, the chief marketing officer at YCH, who also participated in the brew day. "It is just as much about the brewing experience as it is about the beer, and we are grateful to have been a part of this all-ladies brew day to experience it firsthand.”

YCH HOPS’ Pink Boots Blend was released to commercial brewers prior to International Women’s Day on March 8th and members, participants, and brewers around the world were encouraged to create their own celebratory brews. The hop blend was produced in traditional T90 hop pellets with limited availability, and YCH HOPS will donate $3 per pound to the Pink Boots Society Scholarship funds. This year’s blend includes Palisade®, Simcoe®, Mosaic®, Citra® and Loral®.

The release party for Lady Lupulin Blonde Ale is scheduled for March 28, 3-8pm, at Bale Breaker Brewing Co, 1801 Birchfield Rd, Yakima. Hop Town Pizza (a women-owned company!) will be on site, and $1 from every pint sold at the event will be donated to Pink Boots Society, a nonprofit providing educational opportunities to women beer professionals to help them advance their careers in the brewing industry.

Brewers Association Releases 2018 Beer Style Guidelines

 New categories include three styles of juicy or hazy ales

Boulder, Colo  March 20, 2018The Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade group dedicated to promoting and protecting America’s small and independent craft brewers today released its Beer Style Guidelines for 2018. Reviewed and revised annually by the BA, these guidelines serve as a model resource for brewers, beer judges and competition organizers, and celebrate the great diversity of beer around the world.

Hundreds of revisions, edits, format changes and additions were made to this year’s guidelines, including updates to existing beer styles and the creation of new categories Updates of note include:

·Juicy or Hazy Ale Styles: The addition of this trio of styles include representation of what may be referred to as New England IPAs or West Coast Hazy IPAs. The styles will be identified in the guidelines and Brewers Association competitions as “Juicy or Hazy Pale Ale,” “Juicy or Hazy IPA” and “Juicy or Hazy Double IPA.” 

·Contemporary American-Style Pilsener: The addition of this new category addresses marketplace expansion and provides space for sessionable craft brew lager beers with higher hop aroma than found in pre-prohibition style beers.

·Classic Australian-Style Pale Ale and Australian-Style Pale Ale: This split from one to two Australian-Style Pale Ale categories reflects tremendous diversity in the Australian craft beer market and authoritative input from the technical committee of the Independent Brewers Association. Classic Australian-Style Pale Ale can run slightly darker and typically exhibits relatively lower hop aroma. The Australian-Style Pale Ale category provides ample room for a range of somewhat paler, more hop aroma- and flavor-forward beers being produced today by hundreds of breweries in Australia.

·Gose and Contemporary Gose: Predominantly technical tweaks were made to create more differentiation between these two categories.

The Brewers Association's Beer Style Guidelines reflect, as much as possible, historical significance, authenticity or a high profile in the current commercial beer market. The addition of a style or the modification of an existing one is not undertaken lightly and is the product of research, analysis, consultation and consideration of market actualities, and may take place over a period of time. Another factor considered is that current commercial examples do not always fit well into the historical record, and instead represent a modern version of the style.

To help inform the creation of the new Juicy and Hazy categories, a wide variety of beers that were thought to represent or approach this style were sought and tasted. 

“What we discovered and verified was that there was a wide range of alcohol content for what was being perceived in the public as just one style,” said Charlie Papazian, chief of the BA Beer Style Guidelines since 1979, and founder and past president, Brewers Association. “After evaluating appearance, aroma, bitterness, hop characters, mouthfeel and overall balance these beers gave a consistent impression that helped frame the Brewers Association’s inaugural guidelines for three styles of Juicy Hazy ales.”

“The Brewers Association Beer Style Guidelines, led by Charlie Papazian for the past 30+ years, are a trusted resource for the brewing industry worldwide,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Brewers Association. “The guidelines have fostered a lexicon that has allowed the community of drinkers and brewers to talk about beer and celebrate beer across diverse cultures, around the world.”

Crosby Hop Farm and the ALS Association of Oregon and SW Washington Will Tap HAZELAND, the Hazy IPA Collaboration Beer at Proper Pint on March 23rd

What: This special collaboration beer, HAZELAND, is a result of a chance meeting between two Portland residents featured on the Portland episode of BEERLAND, VICELAND’s series which showcases different homebrewing communities around the United States. Zak Schroerlucke, marketing specialist at Crosby Hop Farm was interviewed to discuss different hop varieties and what makes them so unique. Mark Keene was featured as an avid homebrewer and his hazy IPA took 1st place in the episode.

Mark’s brewing style is unique as he is diagnosed with ALS and dictates his ideas, recipe, and methods to his brewing partners who follow his directions for every step in the brewing process. His inspirational story led to the idea of brewing his recipe on a production scale and donating a portion of profits to the ALS Association.

Late last year the Portland episode of BEERLAND premiered at Proper Pint. Zak and Mark attended the premier and quickly became friends. They shared stories from filming and reminisced on the craft beer scene both locally and abroad. Jeb Hollabaugh, head brewer at Labrewatory was also in attendance and offered his services and equipment to brew Mark’s recipe on Labrewatory’s 5-barrel production brewhouse. Crosby Hop Farm donated El Dorado and Idaho 7 hops and Hop Hash for the beer.
