New Belgium Brewing Releases its 2017 Transatlantique Kriek, a 100% Wood-Aged Sour

Courtesy of New Belgium Brewing Co
 The beer blends a New Belgium Golden Sour with an authentic Kriek Lambic;
Also, just released is Passionfruit, the latest addition to the Voodoo Ranger Special Release Series

Ft. Collins, Colo., June 12, 2017 – New Belgium Brewing’s 2017 blend of Transatlantique Kriek is out now and it’s the first time the beer is 100% wood-aged. The sour is a mix of 50 percent New Belgium Foeder-aged Golden Sour and 50 percent Authentic Kriek Lambic from Brewery Oud Beersel in Belgium.

“This year’s beer is particularly iconic because it’s 100% wood aged,” said Andrew Emerton, New Belgium Specialty Brand Manager. “Because of our process with this beer, we actually had the incredible honor of having Transatlantique Kriek at this year’s Toer de Geuze in Belgium, the premier sour beer event in the world.”

“We showcased our beer alongside 12 other authentic lambic producers,” added Lauren Limbach, New Belgium’s Wood Cellar Director & Blender. “It was an incredible honor and a total dream come true!”

The kriek lambic process takes place in Belgium at a few select breweries including Oud Beersel, New Belgium’s collaborative producer. Authentic lambic is spontaneously fermented beer that is soured in oak barrels. Oud Beersel then matures the lambic on Polish cherries for months to produce the kriek, which is then sent from Belgium to New Belgium to blend with an oak-aged sour golden.

New Belgium has a rich history of brewing sour beers and this year marks its 14th year of Transatlantique Kriek. The beer’s flavor profile is spritzy, mouthwatering and fruity, along with tartness from the cherries. The 2017 Transatlantique Kriek is 6.5 percent ABV and is available in 22 oz. bottles and on draft.

Passionfruit Imperial IPA is 8 percent ABV and is available in both 22 oz. bottles and on draft for a limited time only.

Puppy love, wee bites and booze festivals: Summer at McMenamins

Courtesy of McMenamins
1.       Wee, Wee, Wee All the Way to Small Bars
Whether you’re taking some time for yourself or catching up with friends, nothing compares to enjoying cocktails in a European-inspired small bar. At McMenamins, small bars are often found (or sometimes hidden) tucked inside larger McMenamins properties, like Edgefield or Old St. Francis School. All are designed to give visitors variety when it comes to their drinking spot and an opportunity to rub elbows with strangers, possibly while listening to the Grateful Dead. And now McMenamins is introducing wee bites and drams to menus at all of their small bars. These wee snacks satisfy big cravings without the pressure (and price) of a whole plate of food. Our summer picks? Wine connoisseurs can gather in Hotel Oregon’s cool Cellar Bar, foodies can sample wee fondue bites at Cornelius Pass Roadhouse’s Little White Shed and others can heal their hunger at Grand Lodge’s Doctor’s Office Bar with RX bottles of Tom Kah peanuts and probiotic drams. Cigar aficionados are welcome to hide out behind Bagdad Theater at Greater Trumps and trouble makers can enjoy study hall wee bites and cocktails at Kennedy School’s Detention Bar. Whether it’s the wee bites and drams, or the cozy atmosphere, let the small bar vibes in this summer.

2.       Attend a Booze or Beer Festival
Usually summer means beer festivals, but what about the hard stuff? Lucky for booze travelers, this June marks the 6th Annual Oregon Distiller’s Festival, where guests can sample 100 handcrafted spirits from distillers across the state and quench their thirst with original craft cocktails. It’s like Portland’s Distillery Row, but under the shade trees at Edgefield. Okay, McMenamins has beer festivals this summer, too. If you’re in the Seattle area and bummed about missing spring beer events, then save the date: the Inaugural Anderson Summer School Brewfest will take place at the former junior high on July 29. Fans in Oregon and Washington can fest with the best of ‘em.

3.       Embrace the Dog Days of Summer
What’s a relaxing summer day without man’s best friend? Most McMenamins pubs and restaurants, as well as lodging properties, now allow you to bring your pet along for the ride. Sip teacup cocktails street side at Ram’s Head with your furry friend by your side or take them to Cornelius Pass Roadhouse to roam the 6-acre farmstead wonderland. Feeling indulgent? Make a trip of it and book an overnight escape at Edgefield for you and your loyal companion.

4.       Enjoy a Classic Flick on the Lawn
Nearly every Northwesterner has the goal of getting as much sun as possible during the summer  months. McMenamins Edgefield and Grand Lodge are helping by bringing the movies out of the theater and onto the lawn – perfect for a date or for the whole family. To see what other movies are planned, check out Edgefield and Grand Lodges’ events pages throughout the summer months.

Firestone Brewing Announces Thw Release Of Adversus—an unfiltered double IPA

FIRESTONE WALKER UNVEILS “ADVERSUS”
Double IPA Improbably Brewed for Summertime Sipping

Paso Robles, CA: Combining the aggression of North American hops with the tranquility of traditional pilsner malts, the next release in Firestone Walker’s Leo v. Ursus Chronology achieves the improbable: a big, bold beer made for summertime sipping.

Adversus—an unfiltered double IPA—is set to be unveiled at all Firestone Walker locations this Saturday, and will roll into Firestone Walker’s national markets for a limited time starting next week.

“We’ve always wanted to use a light European-style pilsner malt for brewing an IPA, and this was our opportunity,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “Some of the more delicate malt nuances might be lost because we are hopping the bejusus out of this beer, but the pilsner malt still provides a certain palate levity that is fitting for the summer season.”

Adversus marks the second release in the Leo v. Ursus Chronology that was launched in late February. The chronology is composed of limited one-off beers released on a quarterly basis. Adversus will land in different Firestone Walker markets at variable times this June in both draft and 16-ounce can (four-pack) formats. It will be available for a short period before yielding to the next release in the Leo. v. Ursus Chronology.

High and Dry

“Adversus is high on aromatics, balanced in bitterness and relatively light in color owing to the pilsner malts,” Brynildson said.

Adversus is prodigiously dry hopped with a blend of Pacific Northwest hops, with an emphasis on Ekuanot—creating an intriguing aroma profile of stone fruit, pineapple, mango and pine resin. There is also a pungent element that creates a suggestion of, in Brynildson’s words, “dank piña colada.”

The hoppy character is balanced on the palate with a sense of dryness rooted in pilsner malts from Gambrinus Malting, a small malt house in British Columbia managed by Matthias Haaben.

“For me, it’s the most authentic pilsner malt malted in North America,” Brynildson said. “Matthias is a classic German brewing school graduate, and everything they do is very artisanal in style and method.”

He added, “The touch of dryness is what distinguishes Adversus. From the nose, you might expect something stickier, but instead you get this soft, refreshing finish.”

Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a pioneering regional craft brewery founded in 1996 and located on the coast of California. Firestone Walker’s main brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio ranging from iconic pale ales to vintage barrel-aged beers. The Barrelworks facility in Buellton makes eccentric wild ales, while the Propagator pilot brewhouse in Venice specializes in R&D beers and limited local offerings. The 6th Annual Rye Beer Fest Tap List Announced

PORTLAND, Ore. – June 8th, 2017 - The 6th Annual Rye Beer Fest features 24 diverse rye beers and 1 cider.

The Rye Beer Fest, a celebration of the revival of rye beers, will be held Saturday, June 17th, 2017 from 11 am to 9 pm at Happy Valley Station Food Cart Pod (13551 SE 145th Ave, Happy Valley, OR 97015). This year the festival is benefitting New Avenues For Youth.

There is no cost to enter the festival, but a $10 package is required to drink beer. This includes an official tasting glass and four drink tickets. Additional tickets can be purchased for $1 a piece. A majority of the beers will cost one ticket for a four-ounce pour or four tickets for a full glass. A few of the beers may require multiple tickets. Purchase your tickets in advance and save money by gaining additional drink tickets. Get eight tickets and an official rye beer fest tasting glass for $10 online at www.ryebeerfest.com.

As always festival organizer Kerry Finsand tries to curate a beer selection that highlights the impact of rye in a beer. Festival attendees will have the opportunity to try rye beers with a subtle hint of rye while others will feature more aggressive spicy characteristics.

After a few years of unsuccessfully getting a brewer to brew a rare style of rye beer called Kvass, this year it happened. Widmer Brother’s Brewer Thomas Bleigh brewed Kvass is that?, a sour fermented beverage that is traditional in the Slavic and Baltic regions made from old rye bread. The drink is low ABV, salty and tart and comes in at only 1.5%.

This is our first year of ever having a cider in our festival as well. Portland Cider Company has made Brigid, a rye hopped cider (not gluten free) in the hopes of bringing beer and cider lovers together.

If you are not that adventurous enjoy award winning IPA’s or fruit beers, amongst other styles.

Representatives from the New Avenues will be on site to answer questions and run a raffle with prizes ranging from event tickets to various brewery apparel. New Avenues:
New Avenues for Youth was established in 1997 by local business and community leaders in response to the growing needs of homeless and at-risk youth in downtown Portland. Our founders believed that every young person should have food, shelter, and access to education and job training and that we must go beyond meeting those basic needs by offering programs that heal young lives and nurture growth and independence. Since 1997, we have impacted the lives of more than 20,000 individuals through a range of services that address basic needs & safety, provide opportunities for education & career, and help youth achieve self-sufficiency. Our mission is to work in partnership with our community to prevent youth homelessness and provide homeless and at-risk young people with the resources and skills needed to lead healthy, productive lives.
