Courtesy of Ninkasi Brewing Co
EUGENE, Ore.—April 20, 2017—Since 2006, Ninkasi Brewing Company, an independent craft brewery based in Eugene, Ore., has built an acclaimed portfolio of well-balanced IPAs, including Total Domination IPA—the top-selling IPA in Oregon. Available May through September, the brewery serves up the best of its IPAs in a Summer IPA Variety Pack. Offering an array of IPAs perfect for any palate, the Summer IPA Variety Pack will include three, 12-ounce bottles of Total Domination IPA, Dawn of the Red IPA, Beer Run IPA, and Hop Cooler Citrus IPA.

“The best part of summer is discovering new adventures and embracing the enjoyment of the season,” says Ninkasi co-founder and founding brewer, Jamie Floyd. “This Summer IPA Variety Pack offers an easy way to pair these new experiences with the perfect IPA; whether you’re looking for something full-bodied and bold, or floral and bright.”

Total Domination IPA – 6.7% ABV, 81 IBU
This decidedly balanced Northwest IPA celebrates our love of hops. A delightful blend of citrus and floral hop notes dominate the senses while a trio of malt adds a clean finish. Totally hoppy, totally drinkable; the name says it all.

Dawn of the Red IPA – 7.0% ABV, 66 IBU
Bursting with tropical notes, this Red IPA captures the bright complexity of El Dorado and Mosaic hops. An assertive hop presence is carried by a subtle caramel backbone, unearthing a beer that is flavorful and juicy.

Beer Run IPA – 7.3% ABV, 80 IBU
Whether making a run to the corner store or through the mountains, this gloriously crisp and flavorful IPA is worth grabbing. With bold hops and a lively citrus kick, enjoy Beer Run from start to finish.

Hop Cooler Citrus IPA – 7.2% ABV, 74 IBU
Bright and tropical, this India Pale Ale brilliantly layers a citrusy blend of orange and tangerine with a robust hop profile. Crafted with real citrus and packed with as much flavor as a hop cooler, you won’t be able to stop at just one sip of this fresh and fruity beer.

Ninkasi’s Summer IPA Variety 12-Pack will be available throughout each of the 14 states where its beer is sold. Track down Ninkasi retailers through the Ninkasi Beer Finder.

Pyramid Brewing Co. Reveals New Brand Experience that Inspires Beer Drinkers to “Find Your Pyramid”

Courtesy of Pyramid Brewing Co
Seattle,WA- Pyramid Brewing Co. today debuted an invigorated brand aesthetic and experience encompassing an expanded line of canned brews, the addition of Outburst Citrus IPA to Pyramid’s year-round line-up, all-new packaging and revamped digital channels across its website and social media.

The new branding for each beer is pictographic and shares the story of its ingredients by paying homage to iconic Pacific Northwest (PNW) sceneries with a bold color aesthetic. For example, Outburst Imperial IPA’s new label art celebrates the iconic Mt. St. Helens near the brewery’s founding home in Kalama, Wash. and Hefeweizen celebrates classic Pacific Northwest scenery of a tree-lined mountain lake. The bottom of 6-pack carriers will have a call-out to fans to share their adventures with Pyramid. Whether exploring mountain lakes and coastal beaches, walking orchards in Hood River County Fruit Loop, smelling the aroma of hop fields in Yakima and Willamette Valleys, or sipping brews at Pyramid Alehouse before a baseball game, these scenes honor the region’s beautiful surroundings and represent Pyramid’s brand ideals of adventure, curiosity and discovery.

Pyramid Brewing Co. was founded in the PNW because of amazing resources like glacial water runoff and flavorful hop varieties produced in our two backyards of Yakima and Willamette Valleys. There is an incredible amount of inspiration to brew and enjoy craft beer, and after three decades of brewing some of the area’s favorite ales and lagers, Pyramid is a significant piece of many people’s favorite experiences.

Today, the craft beer industry is producing a lot of amazing beer, and it is harder to stand out on high-quality liquid alone. Recognizing this, Pyramid is embracing its legacy and original purpose to inspire adventure and exploration. This is evident in Pyramid’s evolving brewing philosophy and portfolio for current beer drinkers. Moreover, Pyramid is reaffirming its commitment to explore, celebrate and preserve the best of PNW ingredients and the land that produces them.

“Pyramid’s core element is celebrating life’s everyday adventures,” said General Manager Robert Rentsch. “We found that creating great beer is a given in today’s industry, but what’s next? For us, it is Pacific Northwest pride, seeking the best local ingredients and encouraging our consumers to enjoy their passions with craft beer. We are here to inspire those moments with fantastic beers worth sharing, and to introduce new styles of beer along the way.”

As part of the rebrand, Pyramid will release canned beers for Thunderhead IPA, HefeweizenOutburst Citrus IPAand Outburst Imperial IPA. These canned brews are ideal for PNW outdoor activites as they pack easier and chill faster. The novel Outburst Citrus IPA brewed with orange and tangerine peel debuts in 12 oz. cans and 22 oz. bottles. It’s big hop flavor is matched flawlessly by the tasty, aromatic, citrusy punch of the orange and tangerine peel.

“Inspired by the original Outburst recipe, Outburst Citrus IPA uses much of the same malts and hops to be mouth wateringly hoppy,” said Head Brewer Ryan Pappe. “We added orange and tangerine peel to augment the flavor profile with citrus fragrance. Outburst Citrus IPA is an excellent brew to get better acquainted with us when there is so much new to see, taste, smell and love about Pyramid!”

Pyramid’s baseball favorite, Curve Ball Summer Blonde Ale, returns to the seasonal brew line-up with new label art that embeds Seattle’s skyline with classic baseball and stadium images into the design. This blonde ale is brewed with the grandstand atmosphere in mind to be bright, crisp and golden. Supremely satisfying and deeply quenching, Curve Ball is a grand slam for summer’s adventures inside and outside the stadium.

Silver City Brewery & Punk Rock Band MXPX Announce Collaboration Brew for the Band's 25th Anniversary

Courtesy of Silver City Brewing Co
Celebrating 25 years of loud, fast, left-coast punk rawk, MXPX and Silver City Brewery, both from Bremerton, Washington, have joined forces to commemorate the band's anniversary milestone with an exclusive, signature beer. Named after the band's 2007 hit, "Secret Weapon", the brew is a delicious amber lager brewed in the "left-coast common" style.

Courtesy of MXPX
A super easy-going beer with a full-flavored malt backbone and a clean hop kick on the finish, the recipe is a true collaborative effort between the Silver City brew team and band members Mike, Tom, and Yuri, who were heavily involved in its development, adding their own personal tastes and flavor preferences.

"In our earliest meetings, before we had even settled on a style, we determined two goals," notes brewery PR rep Dan Frantz, "First, the beer had to be a thirst quencher-- hot and sweaty punk rock shows demand a cold and crisp beer with a reasonably light body. Second, the beer still had to be full-flavored. The MXPX band members are true craft beer fans, and tend to enjoy beers that have a solid malt presence, so we incorporated a special blend of seven malts along with some traditional German hops for a crisp finish."

The beer will be distributed throughout Washington State and Northern Idaho, as well as nationally available through an exclusive partnership with Seattle-based Tavour, market leaders in direct-to-door craft beer delivery.

Official release events for the beer will be held at Silver City Brewery's Taproom on May 4th and Seattle's Comet Tavern on May 5th, 6pm-8pm. Both events will feature the band members as "guest bartenders", and will be fun-filled evenings with the chance for fans to meet and greet the band.

These particular events will be beer-release events only (no live performances), as the band is busy gearing up for their official 25th Anniversary concerts to take place July 7th and 8th at the Showbox Market venue in Seattle. "Secret Weapon" beer will be available in 16oz cans at both shows.

Oregon Craft Beer by the Numbers

In a Changing Craft Beer Climate, Oregon Drinkers Continue to Support Their Local Brewers

PORTLAND, Ore. (April 19, 2017) — Today, the Oregon Brewers Guild released their annual numbers report for 2016. Overall, Oregon is seeing strong growth in employment and brewing company numbers, while production numbers and sales continue to hold strong and steady. Oregonians are drinking more Oregon beer. Beer consumption increased in 2016, with 23.3 percent of the 3.04 million barrels of all beer (both bottled and draft) consumed in the state were made in Oregon. 707,000 barrels of beer consumed by Oregonians in 2016 were made by an Oregon brewery, an 8.7 percent increase from 2015.
Courtesy of the Oregon Brewers Guild
Oregon draft beer consumption stole an even larger market share, with Oregon breweries producing an estimated 64.9 percent of all draft beer consumed in the state. Barrel production in the state increased by 4.8 percent in 2016, coming in at a grand total of 1,782,000 barrels. More beer meant more people, with approximately 369,000 people visiting an Oregon brewery, pub, or tasting room on a weekly basis, or approximately 19,000,000 total visitors in 2016.
The Oregon brewing industry continues to support job growth in the state, employing roughly 31,000 Oregonians directly and indirectly, and contributing $4.49 billion to the state’s economy. Oregon’s brewing establishments employed 9,453 people in 2016 according to Damon Runberg, Economist with the Oregon Employment Department. Runberg says:
The job growth rate of 8.3 percent over the past the year is really impressive given that statewide total nonfarm growth during the same period was only 2.5 percent. The craft beer industry added around 1,340 jobs over the past two years, a growth of nearly 22 percent, which compares to a growth of 6.3 percent for total nonfarm growth during the same period.  The count of jobs is an underestimate of the total employment impact, as newer brewing establishments and small owner-operated breweries are not included in the total count. The 2016 numbers are provided by the Oregon Employment Department using payroll tax records.
Hops also contribute largely to the Oregon economy. As the second largest hop growing state in the country, Oregon had a 2016 crop value of $34,564,000. Oregon’s 230 breweries continue to support their local economies and communities donating an estimated $3,000,000 to non-profits in 2016.
“Oregon is a consistent leader in the U.S. for craft beer whether it’s the number of breweries per capita, the percentage of dollars spent on craft beer, or the economic impact per capita by Oregon’s breweries,” says Brian Butenschoen, executive director of the Oregon Brewers Guild. “We continue to see an increase in the amount of manufacturing and service jobs added in the state and we saw Oregon breweries increase their export sales by 25.6 percent (650,000 case equivalents) in 2016. Oregon’s craft brewers sold a total of 1.075 million barrels in the U.S. and around the world last year, including barrels shipped to five Canadian provinces and 37 different countries.”
As of December 31, 2016 the state had 230 brewing companies operating 261 brewing facilities in 73 cities across the state, an increase of 15 brewing facilities in 2016.
Brewery count by city and region:
70 in Portland — 105 in the Portland Metro Area
14 in Eugene — 45 in the Willamette Valley
26 in Bend — 36 in Central Oregon
6 in Astoria — 27 on The Coast
6 in Medford — 24 in Southern Oregon
5 in Hood River — 12 in Mt. Hood/The Gorge
2 in Baker City + Ontario — 12 in Eastern Oregon

About The Oregon Brewers Guild

Hopworks Celebrates Earth Week with Salmon-Safe Beer and Cider Releases

Courtesy of Hopworks Urban Brewery

Celebrate Earth Day a few days early with Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB). Every day from April 19 leading up to April 22, HUB will tap a new beer or cider that was brewed with an extra nod to sustainability, including HUB’s first ever beer made with 100% Salmon-Safe Certified ingredients. These releases will be available at all three Hopworks pubs.

“We love this world of ours,” said HUB Brewmaster and Founder, Christian Ettinger. “So we make great tasting beer with as little impact to the planet as we can. We’re a B Corp brewery, and we’re proud to be a member of 1% For the Planet. These Earth Week offerings focus on sourcing Salmon-Safe ingredients and finding inspiration from our community.”

See below for information on each beer release. HUB will also have very limited amounts of Double Vision and Green Loop bottles available at their pubs.

April 19, 5pm - Azacca Cider
Our crisp and refreshing semi-dry cider, dry-hopped with Salmon-Safe Certified Azacca hops from Roy Farms in Moxee, WA

April 20, 5pm - Double Vision PNW-Style English Strong Ale
Originally brewed for Belmont Station’s 20th Anniversary, Double Vision will be available at our pubs for the first time on draft and very limited bottles. As we sipped Fuller’s 2015 Vintage Ale and discussed our plans for this special offering, we were inspired by the beer’s clever balance and strength. Belmont Station and HUB agreed unanimously that a sipping beer for celebration and cellaring would be delicious. Brewed with Celeia, Bullion, Salmon-Safe Centennial hops, and a generous hit of Maris Otter malt. In bottles, this beer will improve with age for years to come.

April 21, 5pm - MaiBock Is Your Bock
MaiBock Is Your Bock is our first-ever beer made entirely of Salmon-Safe Certified ingredients. Conditioned for nearly a month and brewed to Bock strength, this MaiBock features Salmon-Safe Sterling and Crystal hops along with Salmon-Safe Pilsner malt and Munich wheat from Mainstem Malt. All products from Mainstem support family farms, relocalization of malt production, and on-farm water conservation efforts.

April 22, 5pm - Green Loop IPA
The Green Loop is a six-mile park in planning that links Portland’s east and west sides, creating an “urban promenade” for cyclists, walkers, and public transit. As enthusiastic supporters of cycling and alternative transportation, we were honored that Design Week Portland invited us to make a beer inspired by the concept. In this deliciously hoppy IPA, we used Certified Salmon-Safe Chinook and Crystal hops to represent the river that intersects the districts in the loop. We also used a blend of resinous hops from a fellow B Corporation, Crosby Hop Farm, to celebrate the positive environmental impact and the power of community that makes the Green Loop a beautiful addition to our city. The beer is available on tap and in limited bottles at our pubs and at the Design Week Portland opening night.

Ninkasi Brewing Company Unveils A New Look For Maiden the Shade® Summer IPA

Maiden the Shade Returns to Ninkasi’s Seasonal Release Series, May 1, 2017
EUGENE, Ore.—April 18, 2017Ninkasi Brewing Company unveils a new look for its summer seasonal, Maiden the Shade Summer IPA. First brewed in 2009, this IPA boasts an impressively balanced hop profile of eight select varieties paired with a smooth drinkability. Available in 12oz. 6-packs, 22oz. bottles and on-draft, Maiden the Shade returns May through September.

Crafted to celebrate summer and inspired by the annual Oregon Country Fair, a three-day gathering held on 280 acres west of Eugene with music, food and culture, Maiden the Shade quickly became a favorite way to revel in the season. Deemed a Summer IPA, the beer captures a complex hop profile—bold, dank and bursting with floral notes—and an exceptional drinkability. The updated look of this beer follows the evolution of Ninkasi’s branding, displaying a more hand-illustrated design created by its in-house team of artists.

“This beer is rooted in summer festivals and celebrations, so we wanted its packaging to highlight the palette of the season,” says Nick Yarger, Ninkasi’s in-house art director.  “So much of what we do is inspired by our hippie roots with a dash of rock ’n’ roll; this new art draws from the style of American Traditional tattoos, bringing into detail the beauty of the summer maiden.”

“Brewed with eight hop varieties, this Summer IPA has a multi-layer hop complexity that is bold, floral and flavorful,” explains Ninkasi founding brewer and co-founder, Jamie Floyd. “Paired with flaked barley, this beer has a smooth drinkability, perfect for pairing with outdoor festivals or any outside gathering.”

Maiden the Shade Summer IPA can be found on the shelf and on-draft starting May 1, 2017. To track some down, visit the Ninkasi Beer Finder
