Speakeasy Ales & Lagers Debuts Three New Cans this Fall

San Francisco, CA - (September 27, 2016
Speakeasy Ales & Lagers is excited to announce the release of three new cans this fall, including their best selling flagship beers, Big Daddy IPA and Prohibition Ale. By popular demand, Betrayal Imperial Red Ale will also return in a can to Speakeasy’s Limited Series lineup. All three beers will be packaged and shipped to distributors in October.
Speakeasy started filling cans in 2015 with the debut of their Session Series, followed by Double Daddy Imperial IPA in the spring of 2016. The success of those releases, coupled with more consumer interest in canned beer, made canning flagship and seasonal beers an easy choice. Moving forward, Speakeasy fans can expect an even larger portfolio of canned beer, excluding barrel-aged releases.
According to Forest Gray, Speakeasy’s founder and CEO, “We’ve always believed cans are a better package. They don’t allow light or oxygen into the beer, they’re portable, and easier to recycle. When someone goes into a market to pick up a six pack of beer, I can’t find a good reason for them to walk out with something that weighs twice as much and provides the same experience, if not better, in a can."
Prohibition Ale and Big Daddy IPA will be available year-round in cans. Prohibition Ale was the first beer Speakeasy bootlegged back in 1997. Year after year it’s been an award-winning staple, recently receiving a gold medal in the amber/red category at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival. Big Daddy IPA joined Speakeasy’s lineup in 1999, and helped establish the popularity of West Coast IPAs.
Returning after a 2 year hiatus, Betrayal Imperial Red Ale will be Speakeasy’s first seasonal can release from October to January. “It’s a celebration of rich malt in harmony with aromatic hops,” said Zambo, Speakeasy’s Director of Brewing. The recipe was slightly tweaked, adding more hops and layers of malt flavor to make it even more delicious and memorable.

Fans of Speakeasy’s Limited Series beers like Betrayal can also expect a more varied lineup in the year’s ahead. According to Forest Gray, “We’re looking at switching some of the beers around to provide diversity and variety year to year. While it won’t be made this year, look for the return of Butchertown India Black Ale in 2017.”

About Speakeasy Ales & Lagers

Starting with a single, iconic beer, Prohibition Ale, Speakeasy now brews a wide array of acclaimed beers including Big Daddy IPA, Payback Porter, Double Daddy, Scarface Imperial Stout and many more, which are distributed across the entire West Coast and other major U.S. markets. Portland Brewing Collaborates with the Oregon Brew Crew for Limited Edition - Alex's Red Rye IPA

Courtesy of Portland Brewing
PORTLAND, Ore. (September 26, 2016) As the leaves begin to turn, Portland Brewing and the Oregon Brew Crew launch another collaboration beer — Alex’s Red Rye IPA. The second in their Home Brewer’s Series, this fall brew is a seasonal you’ll want to enjoy year-round. The small-batch brewing project was launched to connect brewing enthusiasts with professional brewers. For every pint poured, Portland Brewing will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Oregon Food BankCatch up with the creator of the beer Alex Brehm, the Oregon Brew Crew, and the Portland Brewing team at the Portland Brewing Company Taproom on Tuesday, September 27 at 7pm, for the launch of Alex’s Red Rye IPA.

Oregon has no shortage of brewing talent, and Alex Brehm is no exception. He beat out many other skilled home brewers for the honor to brew his recipe at Portland Brewing with Head Brewer Ryan Pappe. Alex’s Red Rye IPA is orange-red in color, has orange citrus and resin hop notes on the nose, and a light malty sweetness with hints of rye spice. Pappe says of the beer: “The taste is dominated by the loads of hops in the beer, with an aggressive bitterness that is barely restrained by the rye’s ability to clean the palate.” He also notes that it will sate Portland’s hop obsession, “The hops dominate but the caramel sweetness and rye spiciness provide enough body to support the bitterness. The result is a full flavored, medium-bodied, fairly aggressive IPA that should please any hophead.” Brehm agrees, “For this recipe, I wanted to bring in the old school American hop character that balances out the rye malts.” He also enjoyed brewing with Pappe, “One thing I really appreciated about working with Ryan was the collaborative nature. "The beer we brewed together really embodies the spirit of home brewing.”
The beer comes in at ABV: 7.3% | IBU: 70
The three-beer Home Brewer’s Series celebrates and recognizes the dedicated and passionate individuals who contribute to Oregon’s world-class brewing scene every day. The series provides each winning home brewer with the opportunity to pitch their brew to their favorite local bars. Alex’s Red Rye IPA is now available, for a limited-time, and can be found at the Portland Brewing Company Taproom and select bars and taprooms throughout Portland.  Keep your eye out for the third and final beer in the series, debuting in December.

Diamond Knot Beer Week Starts Tomorrow! Four Releases, Four Days

Diamond Knot’s Dir. of Quality, Aaron Brodniak, conducts quality control on the first pours of DK’s newest beer, Red IPA.

Mukilteo, WA – Don’t wait for Seattle Beer Week if you want some beery action. This week at Diamond Knot Craft Brewing locations, we’ll be releasing four new beers in four days starting on Tuesday.

This time of the year is flush with new releases and we found that orchestrating an ever-revolving tap lineup of new and seasonal beers was making the brew crew too thirsty. Hence, Diamond Knot Beer Week 2016, was born with the decision to release four beers in four days.

Get your calendars ready!

Tuesday: Fresh Hop Pale with Amarillo Hops
Brewed with Amarillo hops that were cut from Virgil Ganache Hop Farm vines less than 24 hours before going into the kettle, this beer is about as hoppy and aromatic as it gets! Drink it fresh, drink it now, before this very limited release beer is gone! 6.0% ABV, 33 IBUs

Wednesday: Red IPA
This new Diamond Knot beer was a year in the making. It’s so new we don’t even have a name for it yet. DK brewed an American red ale with a higher alcohol content and hopped it like an IPA. Deep ruby hue in color, our Red IPA is brewed with a new specialty malt called BEST Red X® and a touch of Midnight wheat. A complex, but gentle malt character sets the stage for fruit esters and flavors of citrus orange from early and late Simcoe hop additions. 6.1% ABV, 40 IBUs

Thursday: Storm Surge Winter Ale, Seasonal from October-March
Stylistically elusive, this beer stands alone. Not as hoppy as a Black IPA, and lighter bodied, it falls loosely into the American Dark Ale style. It has a diverse grain bill of Midnight Wheat, Munich, Caramel and CaraRed, which gives it a deep complexity, all the while maintaining a medium-light body and smooth, crisp draw. Aroma is malt-driven with a touch of stone fruit esters. Four different Northwest hops lend to a fruity hop profile, which is apparent, but not obtrusive. Aftertaste of lingering toasted caramel malts and coffee-like bitterness adds to this beer’s unique character. 5.5% ABV, 30 IBUs

Friday: Industrial Ho!Ho! Winter Ale
Our most anticipated beer of the year. This American Strong Ale has maintained a cult-like following for 15 years, and for good reason! Big, hoppy and malty; it a giant built for the colder months. 8.5% ABV, 60 IBUs

For those pumpkin ale fans, we’ll be releasing Industrial Staggering Jack, an imperial pumpkin ale, in mid-October, with a barrel-aged version to follow.

Wayfinder Beer Opens This Week

Creators of Double Mountain Brewery, Sizzle Pie, and Podnah’s Pit Ready to Open Doors of New ‘Slightly Refined,’ Lager-Centric Brewery/Restaurant

PORTLAND, Ore. (Sept 26, 2016) Wayfinder Beer, Portland’s long-anticipated, lager-focused brewery and restaurant, is opening its doors on October 1st, 2016. Wayfinder is the brainchild of Charlie Devereux (Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom), Matthew Jacobson (Sizzle Pie, Quality Bar, Relapse Records), and Rodney Muirhead (Podnah's Pit, La Taq), and sits in the heart of Portland's dynamic Central Eastside neighborhood. A hybrid of a German-style beer hall and a Northwest brewery/restaurant, Wayfinder will quench beer-lovers’ desire for craft beer — especially great lagers — and delicious, made-from-scratch pub fare.
Located in a beautifully renovated 100+ year-old former grain warehouse, Wayfinder will feature 110 seats indoors and an epic raised deck with capacity for an extra 100+ patrons outside. The bar's 16 taps will initially feature a mix of collaboration brews made with great local breweries (Baerlic, Breakside, Hopworks, 54° 40', Widmer), along with some well-curated guest beers. A 10-barrel brewing system will come online soon, with award-winning lager specialist Kevin Davey (Chuckanut, Firestone Walker, Gordon Biersch) at the helm. Celebrated mixologist Jacob Grier brings finesse and style to Wayfinder's cocktail program.
In the kitchen, Muirhead, Willamette Week's 2011 Restaurant of the Year Winner for Podnah's Pit, has designed a beer-friendly menu of fine American cuisine in his signature style: inventive yet gimmick-free, and executed to the highest standards. Sandwiches (think smoked prime rib with beer cheese; house-smoked pastrami), house-made sausages and pretzels, and a wide array of snacks dominate the all-day menu. In the evening, a custom wood-fired grill will deliver steaks, chicken, coal-roasted vegetables, and much more. "We make everything we can from scratch," says Muirhead.
For the founding partners, the opening of Wayfinder is the culmination of a long process of creation and discovery. "We're three entrepreneurs who came together to see what we can add to the Portland scene," remarks Devereux. "The space looks great and we can't wait to open the doors and welcome our great local audience."
About Wayfinder Beer
Wayfinder Beer is an 8,900 square foot space featuring a 110-seat taproom, a 100+ seat outdoor deck and a 10-barrel brewing facility designed for up to 7,500 barrels of beer production per year. Located at 304 SE 2nd Avenue in Portland’s hot Central Eastside neighborhood, Wayfinder will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week.
