PORTLAND, Ore. (September 26, 2016) As the leaves begin to turn, Portland Brewing and the Oregon Brew Crew launch another collaboration beer — Alex’s Red Rye IPA. The second in their Home Brewer’s Series, this fall brew is a seasonal you’ll want to enjoy year-round. The small-batch brewing project was launched to connect brewing enthusiasts with professional brewers. For every pint poured, Portland Brewing will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Oregon Food BankCatch up with the creator of the beer Alex Brehm, the Oregon Brew Crew, and the Portland Brewing team at the Portland Brewing Company Taproom on Tuesday, September 27 at 7pm, for the launch of Alex’s Red Rye IPA.

Oregon has no shortage of brewing talent, and Alex Brehm is no exception. He beat out many other skilled home brewers for the honor to brew his recipe at Portland Brewing with Head Brewer Ryan Pappe. Alex’s Red Rye IPA is orange-red in color, has orange citrus and resin hop notes on the nose, and a light malty sweetness with hints of rye spice. Pappe says of the beer: “The taste is dominated by the loads of hops in the beer, with an aggressive bitterness that is barely restrained by the rye’s ability to clean the palate.” He also notes that it will sate Portland’s hop obsession, “The hops dominate but the caramel sweetness and rye spiciness provide enough body to support the bitterness. The result is a full flavored, medium-bodied, fairly aggressive IPA that should please any hophead.” Brehm agrees, “For this recipe, I wanted to bring in the old school American hop character that balances out the rye malts.” He also enjoyed brewing with Pappe, “One thing I really appreciated about working with Ryan was the collaborative nature. "The beer we brewed together really embodies the spirit of home brewing.”
The beer comes in at ABV: 7.3% | IBU: 70
The three-beer Home Brewer’s Series celebrates and recognizes the dedicated and passionate individuals who contribute to Oregon’s world-class brewing scene every day. The series provides each winning home brewer with the opportunity to pitch their brew to their favorite local bars. Alex’s Red Rye IPA is now available, for a limited-time, and can be found at the Portland Brewing Company Taproom and select bars and taprooms throughout Portland.  Keep your eye out for the third and final beer in the series, debuting in December.
