DescriptionMother Nature is a wonder. Each year she decrees what her bounty will bring, regardless of what we think it should be. Thusly, Sodbuster Farms in Salem brought us Perle early this year. Luckily, we were ready and willing. The consortium of the hops and malt provide the Killer Red with aromas of spiced blood orange, pineapple, granny smith, and forest. A healthy malt bill balances the top end and lends candied fruit, biscuit, and caramel character to the tongue. When life hands you hops, make fresh hop beer!

Diamond Knot Donates More to Fire Efforts Inspired by Crew Member’s Duty Supporting the North Star Fire

Press Release:
MUKILTEO, WA – It is no surprise that the team at Diamond Knot Craft Brewing has concern for the many people affected by the fire devastation in Eastern and Central Washington. What was a surprise to some of the team was that one of its own was over on the other side of the state helping with the coordinated fire efforts.

Cody Chrisman, a member of the Washington Air National Guard, was called into action in August with his Guard unit to provide security in and around Nespelem, Wash. after families evacuated their homes on the Colville Reservation. He said he spent almost three weeks talking with people while making sure no one was looting the vacated homes; learning more about the hardships they were facing. He wasn’t trained in fighting wildland fires before leaving, but wanted to help any way he could.

Cody Chrisman - Courtesy of Diamond Knot Brewing

“I had been requesting to go for a while,” Chrisman said. “It was difficult work. We would wake up and not be able to see our arms in front of us. It was that smoky. I still wake up with dry eyes and a sore throat. I don’t know how they [fire fighters] do it.”

What was really difficult for Chrisman was watching people who couldn’t afford to evacuate, realizing that they could possibly lose a piece of land passed down to them through many generations on the reservation.

“They are such humble people,” he said of the residents and tribal police. “I learned a lot. It was a great experience; something I will never forget. What I really learned is the real heroes are the fire fighters.”

Chrisman got to meet fire fighters from around the globe – Australia, England and British Columbia – who were there to fight fires. He was originally supposed to be in Eastern Washington for 40 days, but was relieved of duty when 150 “red carded” Army troops arrived to not only secure the area, but also work the fire lines.

So, Cody returned to his kitchen position at the Diamond Knot Brewery & Alehouse. The 20-year-old started working with Diamond Knot in May as a host, but quickly moved into the kitchen after realizing that is where he wanted to work. In his military life he remains a Finance Technician with the Air Force, stationed in Camp Murray just outside of Tacoma.

When Major General Daugherty from the Joint Force Headquarters sent a letter thanking Diamond Knot as an employer for supporting its staff member’s “mobilization on State Active Duty to assist with firefighting efforts,” there was an immediate call to action.

Daugherty wrote, “The success or our organization relies on the partnership of those who employ our Soldiers and Airmen. Your support is incredibly valued, and I consider you part of our team that ensures our Neighbors are taken care of.”

Diamond Knot President Bob Maphet understands the impact local businesses can make when they choose to help their communities. It wasn’t long ago that Maphet personally drove a $20,000 check over to Darrington to help support the OSO relief efforts.

“We knew we were going to donate to the relief efforts, but because of the overwhelming nature of the needs, we were still in the process of deciding where to give,” Maphet said. “We opened the letter and were so moved, knowing that one of our own crew members was on the line. We made a decision right away.”

The company had already embarked on a fundraiser this summer to support the Mukilteo Fire Fighters Benevolent Fund through the sales of a limited release beer – Beach House Blonde Ale, which was a reference to Station #24 affectionately nicknamed The Beach House. One dollar from each bottle sold will be donated to the fund that helps community members with the needs not always associated with fire loss.

In response to Daugherty’s letter, the Diamond Knot team decided this week to donate an additional $1 per Beach House Blonde bottle sold to the NCW Fire Relief Fund that is supporting efforts in the Chelan Valley and Okanogan Complex fires, which includes the North Star Fire and Tunk Block Complex

“We want to get these donations out to the community as soon as possible,” said Sherry Jennings, Dir. of Sales & Marketing at DK. “This will mean several thousand dollars between the two funds, both benefitting the communities they serve.

“We are so proud of Cody for getting out there and then sharing his incredible story with us,” Jennings said. “I hope it inspires others to give, too. We’ve been in the community long enough now to be connected to these events by very few degrees of separation. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by these tragedies, as well as those affected by the incidents that happen here in Mukilteo. Large or small, they are difficult.”

How You Can Help: Buy Beach House Blonde Bottles This Weekend at Diamond Knot

Diamond Knot will open its walk-in doors at its Production Brewery & Taproom located at 4602 Chennault Beach Road, B2, Mukilteo; Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m. for those wishing to purchase bottles and/or cases of Beach House Blonde Ale. The Taproom is open until 8 p.m. both days. There are also bottles for sale at the Brewery & Alehouse on the Mukilteo waterfront, as well as the Brewpub @ MLT in Mountlake Terrace.

Okar Blues Brewery Posts 28 Percent Year-To-Date Growth

Courtesy of Oskar Blues Brewery
Strong growth in 2015 has been fueled by DALE'S PALE ALE, along with the releases of PINNER THROWBACK IPA and OSKAR BLUES IPA.

Longmont, CO & Brevard, NC-- Oskar Blues Brewerythe first craft brewery in the country to brew & hand-can their beer in November 2002, continues explosive growth in 2015 and earned a position in the top half of thInc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America for the fifth year in a row.

Colorado's funky and unapologetic brew-pub has grown to become the largest American craft brewery to package beer exclusively in cans, while reaching towards 200,000 BBLs in 2015.  The brewery climbed to 24th on the Brewers Association Top 50 Breweries list which ranks craft breweries based on beer sales volume.

Growth continues to be fueled at both East and West Oskar Blues breweries. The North Carolina brewery in Brevard added a second 50-barrel mash tun, a silo capable of holding 100,000 pounds of spent grain and is in process of completing the second phase of its 17,000 square foot expansion project. The Colorado brewery acquired an additional 60,000 square feet last year in Longmont and is increasing capacity and developing an Oak Aging event venue.

In addition to capacity increases, strong double digit growth of Dale's Pale Ale including a 43% YTD growth trend in Total U.S. Food (Scans) has led the way.  In fact, the original craft beer in a can and flagship of Oskar Blues Brewery remains 50% of the brand mix amongst strong new brands Pinner Throwback IPA and Oskar Blues IPA.

The release of Pinner Throwback IPA (6-packs, 12-packs and draft) and Oskar Blues IPA (6-packs) as year round core packages added firepower to an already strong can-centric brand family. The addition of Pinner Throwback IPA cans to the CANundrum Mixed 12-packs (Dale's Pale Ale, Mama's Little Yella Pils, Old Chub Scotch Ale) is seeing strong 70% growth rate vs. 2014 depletions.

Development of the Oskar Blues sales team continues, eclipsing 68 reps including an experienced chain team. The brewery has expanded distribution to 44 U.S. states and plans to reach all 50 states by mid-year 2016.

Oskar Blues' 2015 milestones:
  • Oskar Blues Brewery Depletions growth is at 28% YTD
  • Dale's Pale Ale 6-pack cans are experiencing 43% growth and are the leading craft can 6-Pack in US Total Food while Oskar Blues Brewery growth is at 60% growth in that segment
  •  CANundrum Mixed 12-pack growth is at 70% YTD
  •  Pinner Throwback IPA, a 4.9 % crushable beer, available year-round in cans and on draft has surpassed Mama's Little Yella Pils in 2015 sales
  •  Oskar Blues IPA, a 6.43 percent beer using Australian hops is available in cans across the country and soon to be on draft
  • Increased distribution to 44 states
Oskar Blues continues to bring innovation to the craft beer industry. The introduction of the Crowler Seamer by Oskar Blues and Ball Corporation provides recyclable 32-ounce cans filled with fresh draft beer to taproom customers for off-premise consumption. In 2015, nearly 200 other breweries and bars across the country purchased Crowlers and cans, creating a side business at the brewery that has accelerated quickly and organically.

Terminal Gravity Releasing Slick Rock Fresh Hop IPA

Courtesy of Terminal Gravity
September 16th, 2015 - Enterprise, OR - Terminal Gravity Brewing is happy to announce that this Friday (September, 18th) Slick Rock Fresh Hop IPA will hit the Portland market.  Brewed with over 100 lbs, of fresh Simcoe hops, this single batch limited release is one of our favorite beers to make!

We partnered with Carpenter Ranches in Granger Washington; they’ve been growing hops since the late 1800’s, and have some of the finest varieties in the Pacific Northwest.  With large and juicy hop cones, it was a no brainer to drive the 300 miles to snatch up a few hundred pounds of freshly picked Simcoe hops to brew our annual Slick Rock Fresh Hop IPA.

Simcoe hops are unique in that they offer great bittering potential, while also having complex aromatic qualities perfect for NW Style IPA’s.  We’re talking about citrus, pine, and earthy notes that reminded us of the harvest we just participated in.

“Our team at TG has a really good time brewing this beer, says Marketing Manager Kevin Harlander.” Part of the excitement comes in the process and the tight time window we have to get it done.  These hops we’re picked in the morning near Granger Washington, and we raced them back to Wallowa County to get them in the brew by midday.”

Slick Rock Fresh Hop IPA is a NW style IPA that has the rich color of wildflower honey and an aroma of citrus pine, with woodsy and floral undertones.  At 6.1% ABV and just over 65 IBU’s, this IPA is well balanced with a reassuring bitterness that’s sure to please.

You can find this single batch, limited release, Slick Rock Fresh Hop IPA at the Terminal Gravity Pub and the following pubs and beer bars throughout Portland area:

Horse Brass Pub
Bridgetown Beerhouse

Hood River, OregonFull Sail Brewing has announced the release of O’Fest in its rotating line of classic beers called the Full Sail Pub Series. Why fly to Munich for a genuine Oktoberfest Lager when this one could be inches from your lips?

“This four-time, gold-medal winner is a smooth, malty lager brewed in the true Bavarian style, using two-row pale, Vienna, caramel and imported roasted Munich malts, moderately hopped with imported Czech Saaz and Yakima sterling hops,” says Jamie Emmerson, Full Sail’s Executive Brewmaster. “It is complex and beautifully balanced, with flavors reminiscent of honey, nougat and roasted nuts.”  O’Fest is now available in six-packs and on draft. Prosit! ABV 5.7% IBU 26

Anyone lucky enough to stop for a pint at our Pub in Hood River will tell you: It’s a spectacular place to share a beer with friends. Late summer in the Gorge might just be our favorite season because our pub deck, overlooking the mighty Columbia, provides the best view in town. Sailboarders and kite-boarders skip across the river using brightly colored sails, while whitecaps and mountains provide the backdrop for the perfect beer to raise a glass with friends. With the Full Sail Pub Series we strive to capture that experience in a bottle and share it with all of our customers who have not had a chance to visit us first hand.

Denver (September 14, 2015): ManCan, the pioneering leader in stainless steel personal keg systems, will present their newest product, the ManCan 128, at an event toasting Denver’s hottest new brewery, Declaration Brewing Co. The event will take place during the Great American Beer Festival 2015 on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The launch party offers a close up look at the ManCan 128, an opportunity to sample Declaration Brewing’s exclusive tap list, and raffle prizes that include the original ManCan 64 and tickets to the Friday and Saturday night sessions of the GABF.

The ManCan 128, a full 128oz container that fits in a refrigerator door, launched on Kickstarter in May and raised $250,968 over their original $70,000 goal. The newly patented technology holds carbonation pressure, locks out air, and keeps beer brewery-fresh much longer than any counterpart. The Original 64oz keg-style growler has been on the market for over three years and has become a popular alternative to the traditional growler. The ManCan 128 is launching through mancan.beer’s online retail store in October.

“We wanted to thank everyone who supported ManCan through the Kickstarter phase of our product launch by throwing a party during the Great American Beer Festival. This will include fantastic craft beer from Declaration Brewing, exciting prizes, and an opportunity to see the ManCan 128 up close,” noted Chris Mueller, Founder, ManCan.

Declaration Brewing Co. is hosting the ManCan 128 launch event in their taproom located directly off the RTD Light Rail D line just six stops from the Colorado Convention Center in Downtown Denver. In honor of the Great American Beer Festival, Declaration Brewing will have a large tap list with exclusive beers just for the ManCan 128 launch event. “This partnership will be beneficial for both parties. We cannot wait to show the ManCan followers how amazing our beer is, as well as show Declaration fans the innovative ManCan 128,” said David “Bug” Stroope, Marketing Manager, Declaration Brewing Co.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Adaptive Adventures who provides progressive outdoor sports opportunities to improve quality of life for children, adults, and veterans with physical disabilities and their families. “We are so grateful that ManCan chose to support our organization by providing us with a donation and a chance to talk about our cause in front of such a passionate group of people,” said Joel Berman, Executive Director, Adaptive Adventures.

ManCan will also present the Pink Boots Society with the proceeds from the 61 WoManCans (limited edition ManCans with Pink Boots Society logo) that were sold during the May ManCan Kickstarter Campaign.

Harpoon and Deschutes Release EHOP: An Ode to Brewing Independence

Employee-owners at both craft breweries come together to create collaboration brews to celebrate ESOP culture

Boston, MA/Bend, OR  (September 15, 2015) – This October, Harpoon and Deschutes will release a collaboration called EHOP – beers brewed by employee-owners in celebration of brewing independence. The story began, in part, in August 2014 when the Harpoon Brewery announced that it was transitioning to employee ownership. When the news broke, employee-owners from Deschutes Brewery were among the first to extend an enthusiastic welcome to the ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) club.

Two versions of the EHOP beer will be released: one brewed at Harpoon in Boston and the other brewed at Deschutes in Bend, Oregon. Harpoon brewer Ethan Elston and Deschutes brewer Ryan Schmiege collaborated on both recipes. While each beer is unique, both recipes include employee-grown hops (EHOPs) and local ingredients.

courtesy of Harpoon Brewing
The Harpoon EHOP will be released as part of the brewery’s limited batch 100 Barrel Series. Harpoon employees contributed their homegrown hops to the recipe, which include Cascade, Challenger, Willamette, and Tettnang hop varieties. The combination of Caramel and Midnight Wheat malt gives this beer a sturdy malt character, while locally sourced sage and thyme add a bit of spice. The result is a full-bodied amber ale with a malty sweetness and lingering spiciness. ABV 8% / IBUs 35.

“It has been quite a year for us at Harpoon as we’ve transitioned to employee ownership,” says Harpoon CEO and co-founder Dan Kenary. “It’s a complicated process and we couldn’t have done it without the support that we received from Deschutes and other craft brewers who had chosen this path before us. We’re extremely proud to be employee-owned – being an independent brewer is something we value deeply and believe it’s at the core of what makes the craft beer industry so great for both brewers and beer lovers. This beer is a high-five to our fellow independent American craft breweries and their employee-owners.”

Courtesy of Deschutes Brewing
Deschutes is brewing its version of the EHOP beer using the same malt and hop profile. Several of the whole flower hops being used in the beer are growing in front of the brewery’s main Bend, Oregon facility, and were harvested by employees this week to add to the beer. This beer will also be an amber ale, brewed with Oregon sage and thyme. ABV 8% / IBUs 35.

Ryan Schmiege, assistant brewmaster for Deschutes, traveled to Boston to collaborate on the Harpoon EHOP. He said, “This is the perfect way to celebrate employee ownership for both of our breweries. I had a fantastic time working with the brewing team at Harpoon, and it was interesting to see how many similarities our two breweries have, even though we are across the country from one another. I’m proud that we’ve come together on this collaboration to celebrate our shared employee-ownership culture.”

Deschutes and Harpoon will host an invite-only EHOP release party on Thursday, September 24th from 3-6 pm at the Corner Office at the Curtis Hotel in Denver prior to the opening GABF session. The Harpoon EHOP will be on tap along with a selection of Deschutes beers. Fellow Colorado brewery employee-owners and their beers will be on hand at the celebration, including New Belgium, Odell, and Left Hand. Harpoon CEO Dan Kenary, Deschutes CEO Gary Fish, Odell CEO Wynne Odell, New Belgium Director of Organizational Development Jennifer Briggs, and Left Hand Co-Founder Eric Wallace will be at the reception celebrating employee ownership and sharing their great beers.

Harpoon EHOP and Deschutes EHOP will be available for purchase in their respective markets in October, which coincides with National Employee Ownership Month. The Deschutes EHOP and the Harpoon EHOP will be available in 22 oz. bottles and draft (limited availability) this coming October.

In 2000 Harpoon purchased a second brewery in Windsor, VT, making Harpoon the 15th largest craft brewer in the US.  Harpoon has since introduced the limited batch 100 Barrel Series and the as well as the all-natural Harpoon Craft Cider made from freshly pressed apples.  In August 2014 Harpoon became an employee-owned company. GoodLife Brewing Adds A Randall To Their Pub.

Courtesy of GoodLife Brewing Co
BEND, OR (Monday September, 14th 2015) What do you do when you have a few extra pounds of wet hops that you don’t want to waste?  You think of your good friends at the Pine Box in Seattle, Ian and Dean, and the fellas at Dogfish Head and build a Randall!  What’s a Randall is a question some of you are asking yourself. When you Google “Randall Beers,” here is the description you’ll find: “Randall is an organoleptic hop transducer module, a double-chamber filter that you connect to a tap of your favorite beer and fill with flavor-enhancing ingredients.” In layman’s terms, that means you can fill a Randall with anything you can think of and mix it with any beer you can think of.

We are going to use the Randall as a promotional and educational tool by brining it to tap takeovers, beer festivals, beer weeks, etc.  The portable Randall will be filled with local grown hops, fruits, peppers, coffee beans, or herbs and filled with whatever beer we/you want to use!  In addition to the portable Randall, GoodLife Brewing will be installing a permanent Randall in our Bier Hall starting the 2nd week of September.  We plan on rotating and infusing our flagship, seasonal, and specialty beers with anything we can find to put through the Randall.

If you want to host a Randall event at your bar or bottle shop, please contact info@goodlifebrewing.com.

Breakside Brewery releasing Bon Vivant A Dry-Hopped Belgian Golden Ale

Courtesy of Breakside Brewey
9/15/2015 -Portland & Milwaukie, Oregon's Breakside Brewery has a new barrel-aged beer up their sleeves called Bon Vivant, the latest in the rare limited edition reserve bottlings. This latest creation is a Dry-Hopped Belgian Golden Ale aged in barrels previously filled with Pinot Noir to yield a beer full of pungent fruity hop flavor and aroma and notes of Belgian and wild funky yeasts, cherry, oak and cola. Bon Vivant will begin shipping to retailers this week in Oregon, Washington and Colorado with 22oz bottles for $13 each and just a few kegs for Breakside's taproom and brewpub.

Description:
In time for fall, we present Bon Vivant, a beer that celebrates

two of Oregon's great autumn crops: hops and grapes. We filled old Pinot Noir barrels from Archery Summit Winery with a hoppy Belgian golden ale and aged it for six months. The barrels contribute notes of light cherry, acidity, oak, and cola; mean- while the hops are Comet and Amarillo, varietals prized for their pungency and fruitiness. Together they harmonize beautifully with the yeast and malt character of the base beer.

A Bon Vivant is not only someone who relishes the luxuries of life-- a good beer, a great wine, a delicious meal--but who also loves sharing those luxuries with friends. We hope that you'll embrace that gregarious spirit as you enjoy this rare beer. Cheers!

Specs:
8.4% ABV
25 IBU
Malts: Two Row, Wheat, Acidulated, Light MunichHops: Comet, Amarillo

Suggested Food Pairings:
Mussels in herb and cream sauce, Shell pasta in clam and cauliflower sauce, Roast mushrooms with parmesan and garlic, Classic seafood paella, Pork chops with anchovies and sage, Shrimp with garlic fried rice.

BEERS MADE BY WALKING RELEASES 2015 DENVER FESTIVAL BEER LIST

Courtesy of Beers Made By Walking
Denver, CO - The Beers Made By Walking Festival is less than 10 days away and we are excited to release the beer list for the event. The list features 33 place-based beers from around the country. We asked breweries from around Colorado to go on nature hikes and beer inspired by plants from the trails. Additionally we brought back the Indigenous Beer Category for breweries that already create beers with regional qualities and ingredients.

The beers will showcase the edible plants that grow in our country as each beer is an homage to the landscapes and communities where each brewery resides.

The BMBW Festival takes place on September 23rd, from 4:30-8pm, at the outside space of Our Mutual Friend Brewing Company in Denver, CO. Tickets are $30 and include unlimited samples and a commemorative glass. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership. The Greenway is a 14-mile public greenway that connects over 100 miles of urban trails in the Denver metro area. Basic Kneads food truck will be on site.
